About Celia Gregory

Celia has been fascinated by nature and its bountiful creations of beauty since childhood captivated in its extraordinary variety that stimulates a sense of awe that is the foundation of her art. Her vivid imagination thrived in folklore, mythology and fairy tales, themes that explore an unseen aspect of life and a sense of wonder. As an adult her interest has matured studying religions and cultural rituals from around the World.

Celia is intrigued and aware of the curiosity humans have with the unknown and the relationship individuals and cultures need to develop with this dimension. Mosaic is an ancient art medium used in churches and temples. The Greeks famous for their lavish marble floors and also the home of Persephone and a tale of a girl who was captured by The God of the Underworld. Her mother Demeter, Goddess of the earth was so distressed, she allowed nothing to grow and famine spread across the lands. Eventually her husband, Zeus found Persephone however she had already eaten 6 pomegranate seeds. The God of the Underworld insisted that Persephone had eaten 6 of the forbidden fruit and must stay with him for 6 months of the year. In her mother’s despair when the time comes for her daughter to return to the world below the earth, winter falls over the lands. She is the reason we have seasons.

Celia Persephone continues a mosaic tradition in a contemporary way aiming to inspire, to generate emotions of joy and beauty purely for the simplicity of that pleasure. Connectedness or spirituality, qualities of relaxation and inspiration, a sense of peace and gratitude are not inherent and her mosaics are created with these concepts and qualities in mind. Her artwork is ever changing and playful. The reflective nature of the materials Celia uses gives a quality of aliveness to her work. On deeper level Celia believes that we can only change when we feel connected, happy and when we enjoy and appreciate what we have. The modern human is so focus on wanting more all the time we are literally rampaging our way through the beauty of this Planet. When we actually see what we have, we can give it a value and be inclined to look after it. In her own way Celia through her artwork is encouraging you to stop for a moment in the incredible detail and sense of time her mosaics reveal and in this appreciate this moment and all the magic that exist here and now. To find peace form the relentless quest for more. To stop, slow down and enjoy.
